CHUTE LIBRE
Chute Libre is a little band formed in Boulogne - Paris suburban areas - in the
mid seventies by the Cinelu brothers. Inspired by Funk and Fusion - we are in
the Head-hunter's years - these young musicians are cultivating a certain
emergency in their way of playing and composing. Their jazz-Funk has quickly
grown to become sophisticated and brutal, arranged and spontaneous. Chute
Libre is also attractive for musicians, the band hosts rapidly new members, a
brass section, a new bass player, a new keyboard player and so on. However,
the real story of the band started when a very popular French guitarist from the
band " Il Etait une fois " met Chute Libre in a bar close to the place in which they
are rehearsing. This new friends will give them later a wonderful opportunity
when he threatened EMI to refuse to sign his own contract if Chute Libre was
not produced by his record company. As a result, two wonderful LPs are
therefore issued in 1977 and 1978, a national tour is also organised, allowing the
band to reach at last a brief success. Nevertheless, it appears to be too much
work for all these musicians, especially when almost all the members are
remarked and asked to play in other bands. Indeed, Mino Cinelu left in the late
70s Chute Libre for the US with Ice, and started to play with Miles Davis in 1980
(listen again to " we want Miles "). The other members have become famous
jazz musicians, as Olivier Hutman (piano) or have kept on playing funk like
Gilles Douieb with the drummer Umberto Pagnigni (rythm section of Captain
Mercier). Today, Chute Libre remains a treasure for syncopated Jazz-Funk
lovers. Moreover, the track called " Octopus ", incredibly arranged in a Tower of
Power way, will amaze auditors looking for fat Funk. Especially reserved for
Hammond and Rhodes fans.
